Back in the Day: Are you still 'Pretty Fly for a White Guy?'

The Offspring have had a bunch of hit singles over the past 24 years, including Come Out and Play, Self-Esteem and Why Don't You Get a Job?, but it was 1998's Pretty Fly for a White Guy that became an anthem for people of all ages and music lovers of all genres.

With its catchy intro of "Give it to me baby, uh, huh, huh," the song is a perfect mix of both catchy music and hysterical lyrics about a wannabe who is trying as hard as he can to fit in with the hip-hop culture because it's the "cool" thing to do. The topic is something most of us have probably experienced and can relate, which is possibly why the song did so well.

The video that accompanies the track is still one of my favorite music videos of all time. The premise: A skinny white guy from suburbia spends the day driving in his car and trying to mimick every hip-hop sterotype imaginable. Dressed in an oversized jersey with a sidways red har and gold chain ... well, you can only imagine how the video ends when he messes with the wrong crowd.

Pretty Fly for a White Guy went on to top many charts and The Offspring are due for a track with as much commercial success. Perhaps this will be accomplished when they release their eighth album this year.

the offspring is seriously one of the first bands i lovedlovedlovedlovedloeved.
and they still are. =]
and pretty fly for a white guy is amazing=]
Actually, I loved the entire "Americana" album and was a little upset that this was the definitive track from it. I mean, I understand that it was radio-friendly, but "Americana" was such a theme album. And I really feel like with a theme album, your big/lead single should be one that defines it. MCR used "Welcome to the Black Parade," Green Day released "American Idiot." I really think the lead single should have been "The Kids Aren't Alright."

But that's why I'm not in the record business, I guess!

I know, I know! *slaps self*

I guess while my inner calculator is in check, I'd like to say that I loved Smash. I wish I could say I gave Americana a listen, but I didn't. Am I still pretty fly for a white girl?

I love those guys. The Offspring was pretty much the soundtrack to my life growing up. Me, my sister and my cousins went pretty teenie over them for a while. Then again i was 12 years old back then so give me a break. I say just the fact that i was listening to the offspring when i was 12 and not the backstreet boys goes to show that i had awesome taste in music...even if i did kind of wanna "have Dexter's babies". Anyways, i grew up, maturity came and showed me the light and i realized that no, Dexter would never marry me, but i figured as long as they kept on making good music i'd settle for being just another fan. And that's the way it's been, for the past 11 years. I still love 'em, don't really wanna jump their bones anymore, but i still love 'em.
