Back in the Day: Say Anything, others weigh in on Hoobastank's 'The Reason'

Hoobastank are primarily a hard rock band but it was their 2004 rock ballad, "The Reason," that became their most successful single. Recently, Say Anything, From First To Last and Less Than Jake weighed in to Buzznet on Hoobastank's hit song.

"The Reason" became the song you loved to hate. The song received consistent radio and TV airtime and was probably played at your prom, graduation, birthday party and so on. The lyrics were easy to remember ("A reason to start over new / And the reason is you"), and during 2004 it seemed as if everyone from age 5-85 could sing "The Reason" from start to finish.

The song was nominated for Song of the Year at the 47th Grammy Awards and made it to #1 on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Hoobastank have since released singles such as "Same Direction" and "If I Were You," and are currently working on their sixth album.

Here's what Say AnythingFrom First To Last and Less Than Jake had to say about the timeless track:

Coby Linder from Say Anything: "'The Reason' is [producer] Howard Benson at his finest. He took a semi mediocre rock band and brought them to pop radio stardom. Genius!"

Travis Richter of From First to Last: "I remember I saw them play 'The Reason' on the VMAs and [singer Doug Robb's] voice must have been hurting cause he was having a hard time. I totally felt for him."

Vinnie Fiorello of Less Than Jake: "The first time I heard that Hoobastank song was in the studio with Howard Benson, the producer who recorded it. I asked, "Who's the girl singing this...?"

It's the same deal with Buckcherry's "Sorry", yuck. But I liked "The Reason" because the lyrics are something a lot can relate to.

I used to LOVE that song. Now I don't hate it, it just got old. (Even though it's rarely played on the radio where I live.)

When I was a sophomore in college, there was a radio in the girl's communal bathroom. It was always tuned to the Top 40 station. You know the kind - they play like 5 or 6 songs in constant rotation all day long. And this song was ALWAYS ON (must have been the peak of Hoobastank's illustrious career). It will forever remind me of using the facilities.

i met the guys in Hoobastank and let me tell you...NO ONE in the band wanted that song on the album or as a single. it wasnt them at all. their label thought they should push it because it was a "summer break up" song getting tons of airplay before it was officially announced as a single. doug and the boys feel obligated to perform the song, but if they had it their way....that song would not exist
pinkbunnierocker: 03/25/2008 10:28 PM
it's also my least favorite song. and at Hoob shows...these fucking annoying teen girls would whine and complain about the pit when Hoob played their good songs and would scream and cry when they played the reason. the guys were soOo sarcastic when they played it...only the real fans understood their pain at having to play the song.....everyone cringed thru the whole song...except for stupid teenies
