Madonna's 'Hard Candy' Reigns Album Chart; Ashlee Simpson Knocked Out of Top 10Newleywed Mariah Carey might be too busy this week with husband Nick Cannon to notice that Madonna has knocked her out of the #1 position on this week's Billboard 200. Around 280,000 people wanted a taste of Madonna's Hard Candy, putting her new album at the top of the charts once again, according to SoundScan. (Madonna has had six previous albums debut at #1.)
![]() Coming in at #2 is Mariah's E=MC2, which sold only 95,000 copies last week (bringing the total to 742,000). Carey is going to need a strong new single or a quick divorce to possibly get the ball back in her court. Poor Leona Lewis has dropped as well. to the #3 spot. with 84,000 units of her album Spirit. Lewis is just 20,000 units short of hitting a total of 500,000 copies sold, according to SoundScan. Meanwhile, R&B singer-songwriter Lyfe Jennings has proven there's still "lyfe" in her career. Leaving a two-year gap between his last record, The Phoenix, Lewis has returned strong with 80,000 copies sold of Lyfe Change, giving him the #4 spot and a reason to celebrate. While you may only know one song from Def Leppard ("Pour Some Sugar on Me"), the rock band has been releasing hit singles and chart-topping albums since it formed in 1977. The newest Def jam, Songs From the Sparkle Lounge, debuted at #5 this week with 55,000 units, proving the boys have still got it. The Roots are riding the tail of the Leppard (get it?) with their newest effort, Rising Down, hitting the #6 spot in its first week, with 54,000 copies having flown off the shelves. Portishead's Third, also released last week, found its way to #7 on the charts, with 53,000 records sold. The band is neck and neck with both The Roots and Def Leppard in terms of sales. Anything Tom Petty does apparently strikes interest, as witnessed by his side project Mudcrutch and their self-titled debut arriving at #8 with 38,000 copies sold in its first seven days. Now That's What I Call Music! 27 drops from #6 to #9 this week, with only 31,000 units moved. Just wait until Now That's What I Call Music! 28 hits stores and the compilation sells like hotcakes once again. Rounding up the list at #10 is Tim McGraw and his Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and 2 selling an admirable 29,000. It's interesting to note that last week's chart-toppers Flight of the Conchords (#17), Ashlee Simpson (#31) Atmosphere (#41), the "Juno" soundtrack (#13), George Strait (#18), Taylor Swift (#11) and Phil Vassar (No. 51) have all been knocked out of the top 10 by new releases. Can any of these albums get back in the game?
