Ex-Operation Ivy Singer Jesse Michael Itching to Play Solo Shows

Jesse Michaels, former Operation Ivy singer and arguably the king of ska punk, will be performing again this summer. Buzznet has the date and location of one of his upcoming gigs, and more are on the way.

Op Ivy fans are well aware that a reunion likely won't be happening anytime soon — in a MySpace post earlier this year, Michaels addressed lingering questions with, "[Will] it happen? The most honest answer is probably not." However, he has written a bunch of new songs of his own that he's planning to break out.

In another, more recent post, Michaels explained: "I'm going to be doing some acoustic gigs to start my new music leg. They are scheduled for August, and I will post it when I get more whens and wheres. All I know right now is that I'm doing two in L.A. My whole thing right now is to write 12 to 16 new songs, and learn how to play them well. Although I have written a couple of albums' worth of stuff on the guitar, I never really learned how to play and sing at the same time, which is hard as hell for anybody who hasn't tried it. This will give me a substantial body of material to work from — whether that means trying to create a band or just being some kind of grown-up punk troubadour or something. Who knows? You have to start with the first step first and worry about the secondary effects later."

While Michaels isn't ready to announce the dates and locations for his gigs just yet, an August 16 show listed on American Lies' MySpace has Michaels on the bill. The gig is set to take place at the Riverside Jazz and Art Exchange in Glendora, California.

Operation Ivy broke up in 1989 after releasing only one full-length album, Energy. Michaels has also created music for two other projects during the past 19 years — Big Rig and Common Rider (both are now defunct).
