My Review of the Fantastic Green Day Documentary "Heart Like a Hand Grenade"
On March 25th, 2009, I attended the one and only screening of Heart Like a Hand Grenade at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. Directed by John Roecker ("Live Freaky! Die Freaky!"), the film is a two-hour documentary of the making of Green Days 2004 record American Idiot
.Heart Like a Hand Grenade was the perfect mix of studio banter, recording, songwriting and rehearsals, blended together with clips from the bands first performance (in support of American Idiot) on September 16th, 2004, which, of course, I attended. Rather than recite the entire 120-minute masterpiece, I will put the spotlight on my four favorite parts:Watching Billie Joe alter and add lyrics to the song Letterbomb (originally called Clusterbomb) was unbelievable. In my opinion, Billie Joe is (in my opinion) the best lyricist of all time and to see his mind at work sent shivers down my spine. Another highlight was seeing Billie Joe record vocals for a few of the songs without any music behind him (He was listening to the music in his headphones, which we couldnt hear.) The man has an incredible voice, that nobody can emulate, and to hear his voice on its own was something Ill never forget. Towards the end of the film, Billie Joe performed a song that was left for American Idiot. No Green Day fan had heard this song before ever. A slow, acoustic number, the song was honest and heartfelt. Although the lyrics were hard to decipher, it was obviously a love song, most likely written for his wife Adrienne. I am on the Green Day message boards everyday and its nice to know Billie Joe reads the boards too from time to time. One clip in the film shows Billie Joe mocking haters on the boards, repeating lines hes read such as: Warning sucked. That was their worst album. "Kerplunk! was their only good record. Green Day need to make another record like Dookie. Green Days music sucks now, but Billie Joe is sooo hot. And my personal favorite, which I have read time and time again Why do Green Day get fat when they arent on tour and then get skinny when they go back on tour? American Idiot ends with Whatsername my favorite song on the record and the one that fills me with the most emotion with each listen. Billie Joe actually cried in the film, for the first and only time, while listening back to the song. Its at this moment that you can tell how honest and real his lyrics truly are. He writes from the heart. The film ends with a 10-minute jam session by the band, featuring Billie Joe on drums, Mike Dirnt on bass and Tre Cool on vocals. Its a hilarious song about drinking that is intertwined with short little clips that were left out of the film. At the very end of the movie I was left speechless. I had just witnessed something most will never get to see. John Roecker has no plans to release the film in any other theaters, online, or even on DVD.The theater was packed with Green Day fans from all over the country. One woman flew all the way from Germany just to witness the creation of (in my opinion) the greatest record of all time. It was a reunion of fans Ive seen at every Green Day show in the past and will see again during the 21st Century Breakdown tour this May. As a bonus, Roecker created small programs for the film. One page in particular is the original track list for American Idiot. Notice how different it is from the finished product: American Idiot Jesus of Suburbia Holiday Blvd. of Broken Dreams Are We We Are St. Jimmy Bagdad Clusterbomb Wake Me Up When September Ends Were Coming Home Again Whatsername I am still in shock over Heart Like a Hand Grenade and I cant wait for Green Days new record, 21st Century Breakdown, on May 15th. March 16, 2009Pirate Bar, LA Fashion Week, Santa Anita Raceway!
On Friday Night I took my friend Alex to 'The Pirate Bar' in Downtown Los Angeles for his last night in town.
Once inside, you feel as if you stepped into a party on a pirate ship. Perhaps it's the barrels, skulls, and paintings of ships that give it this feel! The lighting is dim and the booths are comfy, but few.The 'Pirate Bar' has been advertising a lot lately and has sadly become quite popular. A few months ago we could walk right in and get seated ... now we have to make a reservation. This is why I have chosen not to tell you it's 'real' name ... ![]() Saturday was spent at LA Fashion Week at the Los Angeles Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The Theatre has been there since the early 1900's and used to be the place to see films. Words can't describe its beauty (So go here and see for yourself)! Kyla Fox was walking in David Alexander's fashion show, which took place at around 5pm. I couldn't have been prouder of her. She looked fantastic and there was a gigantic crowd of around 500 people that came to watch in awe :) We decided to hang around until really late to watch the other shows and party with fashionistas. I heard many a snooty thing at this event. ![]() Sunday I had the brilliant idea to go to Santa Anita Raceway. When I was younger I loved going to the racetrack in NY with my parents. This was a mistake. Dirty, dingy and depressing, the place was filled with TSOFE (the scum of the Earth) and I honestly felt uncomfortable the entire time! We decided to stay for three races. I won one and lost two. I won't be going back!To end a nearly-perfect weekend, we headed to Desert Rose. An incredible restaurant I wrote about in last weekend's review. It made everything all better. ![]() DJ Rossstar

March 9, 2009Desert Rose, The Crocker Club and Beyond ...
Many of you have been asking me what I do when I am not hosting my show.I have decided to post a bulletin at the end of every weekend to tell you exactly what I have been up to. Hopefully this will introduce you to some new and exciting things in Los Angeles.
Friday night Kyla Fox and I had dinner at a new place in Los Feliz called Desert Rose. The house salad was gigantic for the price and the chicken/sweet potato fries were some of the best we've ever had ... and I mean that. This place is on Hillhurst and you really can't miss it when driving by. Following Desert Rose, we met up with my long-time friend Alex at a bar called The Vine Bar. It was a decent size and had an absurd amount of free food because it was an after party (Alex is in town from NYC, producing a play called 'Stitching.') Saturday was spent in Garden Grove at the Smartpunk parking lot mini-festival with The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon and more. I met an insane amount of DJ Rossstar's Punk Rock Show viewers and had fun taking pictures with everyone. At night, Kyla and I saw Alex' play 'Stitching.' It's a two-person play of a very sexual nature. I don't want to give too much away but you should definitely go ee it if you are in LA. Warning ... your parents may or may not be offended by a majority of the language ... but the acting is top notch. After the play we headed to The Crocker Club in Downtown Los Angeles. It's a brand new bar, inside of an old bank that closed in th 1950's. This place was completely original in terms of scenery. In fact ... a majority of the seats are inside of the old safe! That was my weekend ... now tell me about yours! DJ Rossstar

March 3, 2009Green Day Find Inspiriation in Meatloaf?
I just heard Meat Loaf's "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" on the radio for the first time in five years.
I've never told anyone this before, but this was the song that trulygot me hooked on rock music. Oddly enough, while listening to "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" today, I found the overall theme and acts of the song to be very similar to Green Day's "Jesus of Suburbia," "Homecoming" and "21st Century Breakdown." Perhaps this why I love American Idiot so much more than any other Green Day record. I guess I was a sucker for a rocker opera all this time. Now all Billie Joe needs is a duet with a female singer on the next album. I'm positive many of you are unfamiliar with "Paradise By the Dashboard Light," but I urge you to watch the video below and share your opinions on it with me: DJ Rossstar
