My Three Day Green Day Experience

My Green Day week began on Wednesday, June 3rd.  I arrived to Last Call with Carson Daly at 3:30pm, where my good friend, and longtime Green Day friend, Alex was holding my spot in line. After a few hours of waiting, we entered the studio and were placed into seats where we watched Carson do a quick interview with Green Day. We were then moved to the floor and watched Green Day perform ‘21st Century Breakdown,’ ‘Know Your Enemy,’ ‘21 Guns,’ ‘East Jesus Nowhere,’ The Static Age,’ and ‘Murder City.’ The biggest surprise of the night was when Green Day came back, dressed as The Foxboro Hot Tubs, and performed ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ and ‘Mother Mary.’ Surprisingly, the majority of the crowd didn’t seem into the entire performance, and many of them didn’t know any of the lyrics, but it didn’t matter to me because I had an amazing time as always.

On Thursday, June 4th, I arrived at the Henry Fonda in Hollywood at around 2:30pm. After waiting in like for 5 hours with my new best friend Niki (thank you for getting me in), we were finally allowed to enter the venue. I was standing right in front of  Billie Joe’s microphone, with only one girl in front of me. Standing with my pact of superfans, we decided on what old songs we were going to request. Green Day hit the stage at around 9:15 and performed:

21st Century Breakdown
Know Your Enemy
Before The Lobotomy
East Jesus Nowhere
Last of the American Girls
Murder City
Little Girl
The Static Age
21 Guns
American Eulogy
See The Light

The band sounded tighter than ever, although Billie Joe did mess up the entire first verse of American Eulogy (by singing the entire second verse instead). Next came ‘American Idiot,’ ‘Jesus of Suburbia (my friend Perry got called on stage to sing the ‘Dearly Beloved’ section of the song),’ ‘St. Jimmy’ and ‘Longview’. It was finally time for requests … After minutes of screaming, our request was answered and Green Day performed ‘Brat.’ Billie Joe then asked me what other song I wanted to hear, but sadly turned down all three of my suggestions (‘86,’ ‘Castaway’ and ‘Waiting’). We did get to hear ‘Christie Road,’ ‘Going to Pasalacqua,’ ‘Coming Clean,’ ‘Dominated Love Slave’ and ‘Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?' before they ended the show with ‘She’, ‘Basket Case,’ ‘King For a Day’ and ‘Minority.’ At the end of the show, my good friend Marko 72 hooked me up with a pass for the afterparty. Tre eventually  made his way to it, along with Audrina Patridge, Drew Barrymore, Bob Saget, Justin Long and Stacy Keibler … Who knew all these celebrities were Green Day fans? It was the perfect end to a perfect night.

On Friday, June 5th, I arrived at the Henry Fonda (again) at 10am for KROQ’s Breakfast With Green Day. My other new best friend Diane (thank you for getting me in) and I waited on line until 1:30.pm As I entered the Fonda, I got the best spot you could possibly have … right on the barricade, directly in front of Billie Joe’s microphone. When Kevin and Bean first came out, they asked how many times we have seen Green Day, to which I proudly yelled ‘38.’ Little did I know, as soon as Green Day came out and they started their interview, Bean pointed to me and said ‘This guy has seen you 38 times,’ to which Tre replied ‘I know that guy!’ Billie Joe also made a funny comment, but it was impossible to hear what he said. (Listen to the entire interview Monday morning on KROQ to find out!) After a lengthy interview, Green Day took the stage to perform. I was so close that it was nearly impossible to hear the vocals, but it didn’t matter. Between the sound and the fact that the band was wearing regular clothes and not their ‘stage’ outfits, I felt like I was watching my friends during band practice. They performed ‘21st Century Breakdown,’ ‘Know Your Enemy,’ ‘Murder City,’ ‘East Jesus Nowhere,’ ‘The Static Age’ and ‘Minority’. At the end of the set, Tre Cool walked right up to me and gave me the drumsticks he had used. Billie Joe gave me a high-five as he left the stage. That was it. After four years of waiting (the last time I saw Green Day perform AS Green Day was October of 2005), I got the chance to see Green Day three days in a row … and after 16 years and 30+ Green Day shows, it never gets old.
